Otorhinolaryngology
Otolaryngology is a medical specialty that treats the ears, nose, and throat. It is also known as otolaryngology-head and neck surgery because the doctors are trained in both medicine and surgery. An otolaryngologist is commonly known as an ear, nose, and throat doctor, or ENT for short.
This medical specialty extends back to the nineteenth century, when doctors realized that the head and neck had a number of interrelated systems. Doctors created strategies and equipment for examining and treating head and neck issues, which eventually became a medical specialty. The American Academy of Otolaryngology claims that it is the oldest medical specialty in the United States.
Otolaryngologists differ from many physicians in that they are qualified to perform many types of surgery on the delicate and complex tissues of the head and neck.
